Synopsis (via GR)
A weekend retreat at a cozy mountain lodge is supposed to be the perfect getaway . . . but when the storm hits, no one is getting away
It’s winter in the Catskills and Mitchell’s Inn, nestled deep in the woods, is the perfect setting for a relaxing–maybe even romantic–weekend away. It boasts spacious old rooms with huge woodburning fireplaces, a well-stocked wine cellar, and opportunities for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, or just curling up with a good murder mystery.
So when the weather takes a turn for the worse, and a blizzard cuts off the electricity–and all contact with the outside world–the guests settle in for the long haul.
Soon, though, one of the guests turns up dead–it looks like an accident. But when a second guest dies, they start to panic.
Within the snowed-in paradise, something–or someone–is picking off the guests one by one. And there’s nothing they can do but hunker down and hope they can survive the storm.
My Thoughts
After seeing so many great reviews for Ms. Lapena’s previous books, I was ecstatic to win a copy via GR. Once received, I started reading it immediately.
In the fashion of a murder mystery dinner/parlor game, AN UNWANTED GUEST grips the reader right from the start.
Ten guests, each for their own reasons, are heading to Michell’s Inn in the Catskills to get unplugged. However, an ice storm hits, power is lost and bodies start to pile up. Are they unfortunate accidents or something worse like murder?
From the start, the reader is introduced to the guests, however, as the story continues the reader learns more about these guests and what secrets they hold. Even though all of the guests are inserted into the first few pages, it isn’t overwhelming getting to know who is who.
The pages just kept turning for me and my thoughts kept changing as to who the killer was. Did I figure it out? Not even close!!!!
A captivating and chilling read that held my interest from the first page to the last. I will definitely be reading Ms. Lapena’s previous novels!

I’ve read, and enjoyed two of her books, so think I’d like this one too. I’m glad to see you enjoyed it!

I have her previous books on my list and hope to read them sooner than later.
